February 2017 *I have a lot of e-mail, documents and pictures on my computer and I am always worried that I might lose them. Is there any way to make sure that doesn't happen? *Do I really need antivirus software on my computer and, if so, what is the best kind? *I have a gmail e-mail account and I just received a notification from Google that "Someone has your password" and they have blocked access to the account. Have I been hacked? What should I do? April 2017 *It doesn't happen very often, but occasionally someone tells me that they are certain they sent me an e-mail but I'm equally certain I never received it. Is there anything I should be doing to ensure that I get all of my e-mail? *As a longtime OCW client, it occurred to me the other day to ask if there's anything electronic that you and Terri don't work on? * I'm thinking about buying a new computer. OCW services both Mac and PC users so what would you recommend? August 2018 *I am really, really new to using a computer and the prospect of making some kind of serious mistake using it concerns me a lot! Can you give me a quick list of things that I should do or not do? *My computer appears to have crashed! Is there any way to recover all of the pictures and other documents I had stored on it? February 2019 *I just got this very alarming e-mail claiming that a hacker had broken into my laptop, taken embarrassing pictures of me and threatened to send copies of them to my entire contacts list unless I send hundreds of dollars worth of bitcoin. I ignored the threat but is it really possible for someone to break into my computer as he described?? *I just found out that a bunch of my friends received e-mails from me soliciting money! I never sent those messages! What do I do? April 2019 *I'm getting tired of running back and forth to the bank and mailing payments for bills. I'd like to do more financial transactions online but I'm concerned about the safety, given all the news stories about identity theft and such. How safe is online banking and bill paying? June 2019 *I've decided that it's time to replace my computer. What kind should I get and how much should I expect to pay for it? August 2019 *Client C.W. recently wrote to ask "Recently I have borrowed two different kitchen appliances which are part of the Internet of Things [IoT]. As soon as I turned them on, they connected to the WiFi network in my house... I am trying to understand "what’s in it for me" if I operate an appliance in my own house via WiFi." October 2019 *I continue to be beseiged by spam e-mail. Is there ANY way I can get rid of it? December 2019 * My PC is using Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I started getting a notification from Microsoft that support for Windows 7 ends in January. Does that mean my computer will quit working?
